According to The Desert Sun*: “Authorities made more arrests during the Stagecoach – California’s Country Music Festival than they did over each weekend of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.” The newspaper says 157 people were arrested during the three-day country music festival up significantly from the 93 arrests during the first Coachella weekend and the 133 arrests reported during the second weekend. The charges were: 3 on suspicion of battery, felony vandalism or sexual battery, 141 others were arrested for other alcohol-related incidents & 13 on suspicion of being drunk in public….weird.
I’m pissed I didn’t get to go to either, I love music festivals. But that’s not the point of this piece. Lets talk line ups. Coachella had way too many to list, so here are 3 I’ve seen live & 2 I want to: AC/DC, Bad Religion, Rev. Horton Heat, Alabama Shakes, Run the Jewels. And Stagecoach had a pretty diverse list also. I’ve seen Steve Earle a couple of times and hope to see TC3, Nikki Lane & Merle Haggard (w/Willie!), but Dierks was there, Miranda, Thorogood, Allman and others rounded out the 3 day country bash.
Ok, so why the arrest numbers? Because after this gets posted, I’m going to print it out and shove it in the face of a local convenience store owner I know who was bagging on Coachella because, in his estimation, the 3 day festival was going to be ”nuth’n but a bunch of wanna be hippies listening to shitty music and doing drugs”. I tried to let him know that it really doesn’t matter what’s on the venue menu, shit happens. I’ve seen a bunch of stupid people do stupid things at nearly every show I’ve ever been to, brawls in Vegas & SLC Suicidal shows were nothing like the ruckus in the parking lot after seeing Alabama during a 4 day rodeo in Oregon.I could go on, but in all reality, whether you get there by pony or Prius, some folks get boozed and mess up: “Unlike Coachella, Stagecoach attendees are allowed to carry their alcoholic drinks throughout the festival grounds. Authorities noted that the bulk of the arrests were related to drinking.” Only difference I can see...
